AI was founded as an academic discipline in 1955 and since then it has done many revolutionary things in the field of science and technology. Artificial technology or AI is not a new term in the IT-sphere, but now there are further verticals of AI that are shaping the industries globally. The field was founded on the assumption that human intelligence can be so precisely described that a machine can be made to simulate it. Computer science defines AI research as the study of “intelligent agents”: any device that perceives its environment and takes actions that maximize its chance of successfully achieving its goals. A more elaborate definition characterizes AI as “a system’s ability to correctly interpret external data, to learn from such data, and to use those learning’s to achieve specific goals and tasks through flexible adaptation. The application and usage of AI increase from the year 2015 onwards wherefrom only sporadic usages it directly gained 2700 projects. Whenever we hear about AI the first thing that comes to our mind is robots. Big-budget movies have created this ideology in our minds.
Artificial intelligence is that the machine can perform as same as human beings and execute tasks from easy to complex ones. As technology advances, previous benchmarks that defined artificial intelligence become outdated.
The application of AI is endless. It is applied to many different sectors. Some examples of AI are self-driving cars, computers playing chess by themselves, etc.
For performing such tasks the machine should contain all the external data and values that will make it aware of all the consequences that may take place.
Based on the type or the number of tasks performed by the AI it can be categorized into two parts:-
l Weak Artificial Intelligence:- machines designed through AI to perform one particular task. Amazon’s Alexa and Apple’s Siri are some of the examples of weak AI where you ask the AI assistant one question and it answers it for you.
l Strong Artificial Intelligence:- machines designed through AI to act like human beings. These tend to be more complex and complicated systems. They are programmed to handle situations in which they may be required to problem solve without having a person intervene. These kinds of systems can be found in applications like self-driving cars or hospital operating rooms.
Now talking about the thing for which AI is mostly known to everyone is ROBOTS.
Artificial intelligence plays the most important role in the creation of robots. Robots have sensors and moving parts and to make them work some kind of instruction is needed and that is provided by the AI as it helps in processing the problem environment. Based on the inputs and outputs available from the environment the actions are designed for the robot accordingly. Artificial intelligence and autonomous robots go hand in hand. Robots with no AI will continue to make the same mistakes again and again but the ones with AI will act smartly and will adapt to act like humans and not even doing the mistakes done by humans.
Sophia is a realistic humanoid robot capable of displaying human-like expressions and interacting with people. It’s designed for research, education, and entertainment, and helps promote public discussion about AI ethics and the future of robotics.
It is not only limited to only science and technology but is also applicable in the fields of philosophy and ethics. It is assumed that if the use of AI and robots increases it will at a certain stage hamper the economy by causing a huge amount of unemployment but in the long run if the productivity and redistribution increase then it can be again stabilized. In February 2020 a European paper was published about the benefits of AI in the fields of economy and health care as well. It stated that it can improve the diagnosis system and can take better actions than humans, it can also help in the fields of farming, climatic changes, and its adaption, etc.
Not only in the sectors of economy & health it's also applicable in the fields of Cybersecurity. The cybersecurity arena faces significant challenges in the form of large-scale hacking attacks of different types that harm organizations of all kinds and create billions of dollars in business damage. Artificial intelligence and Natural Language Processing (NLP) have begun to be used by security companies — for example, SIEM (Security Information and Event Management) solutions. The more advanced of these solutions use AI and NLP to automatically sort the data in networks into high-risk and low-risk information. This enables security teams to focus on the attacks that have the potential to do real harm to the organization, and not become victims of attacks such as Denial of Service (DoS), Malware, and others.
Its also helping the Government in case of many applications and regulations. Its already used in many countries for facial recognition and mass surveillance. In 2019, Bengaluru, India has used an AI-controlled traffic system in 387 traffic signals which can detect the density of the traffic formed and the time required to clear the traffic.
Though thought-capable artificial beings appeared as storytelling for a long time and it also covers a great part of the fiction movies. The first such movie to portrait this thing was Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein where a human-created robot becomes a threat to its masters. The use of AI is also a portrait in Marvel comics where Iron Man uses an AI system called Jarvis to control everything.
As we can see with time AI has evolved very much. It's taking the market with time.
Many types of research are going on on the topic of AI and it's growing exponentially with time.
From these results, we can assume that AI is going to be the technology trend of 2020 and in the future also though it's having many glitches that can cause harm to human privacy and safety.
